JSON – Java Script Object Notation

JSON is a lightweight data-interchange format. JSON data is in text-format, easy for humans to read and write and easy to parse the data. JSON is a subset of Javascript. JSON has two structures.

  • Object – collection of name/value pairs. eg: {name:mani, age:25}
  • Array – ordered list of values eg: address:[12, north st, chennai, 600042]

JSON main application is Ajax web application programs. It acts alternative to the XML format.

JSON Basic Types

  • Number (integer, real, or floating point)
  • String (double-quoted Unicode with backslash escapement)
  • Boolean (true and false)
  • Array (an ordered sequence of values, comma-separated and enclosed in square brackets)
  • Object (collection of key/value pairs, comma-separated and enclosed in curly brackets)


“chapters”:{“chapter1″:”Ajax Basics”, “chapter2″:”Ajax Examples”, “chapter3″:”Using JSON in Ajax”},

In the above example, bookname represents the String type, price – numeric type, authors – represents the Array, chapters representing the Object (key, value pair).
